Well, as promised, we completed our vacation road trip with snacks as recommended by several followers on Twitter. Next up: Corn Nuts. This one was recommended by http://twitter.com/Vicki_Lanka. We must admit that we put this one off until the trip home because neither of us are a huge fan of Corn Nuts. But we wanted to be true to our call out so we got a bag and indulged.
The good news about this choice is that the first few crunches in your mouth takes us back to our childhood: eating Kellogg’s Corn Pops. You get this instant semi sweet burst of sweetened corn and I [Brent] had images of filling my bowl full of milk and watching the little yellow corn pops floating around in there.
But then everything changes.
Corn Nuts have salt in them, so after that brief burst of Corn Pops cereal like sweetness, it’s followed by a salty, crunchy and nutty explosion: living up to it’s name Corn NUTS.
The nutty flavor hangs around for about 30 minutes after you’ve eaten a few. So if you like Corn Nuts, then you’ll enjoy the strong, long lasting flavor of this item.
While on the road we got a Facebook request to try another favorite. Our friend Janet from Florida. She suggested we get a bag of her favorite: Twizzlers
So as an added bonus: we picked up a bag of the original strawberry flavor at a Holiday station in Two Harbors. We had a long drive and we needed more sugar to keep us going. The bag was opened before we left the parking lot and to our delight the contents were soft and fresh. Now most of you are probably familiar with this item. Bags of the strawberry twist-like licorice are found in most big box retailers. So it’s obviously a favorite for many. But we don’t typically buy it ourselves. We were impressed with how much we liked it, even though it’s not overwhelmingly sweet or salty.
As you can see, we pretty much devoured this bag. So we’ll definitely put this on our list for the next road trip.
Thanks for all the great suggestions. It made for some great entertainment on the long drive. Here’s a list of our personal favorite snacks for the car:
- Trail Mix
- Chocolate covered almonds
- Fresh fruit (grapes, cherries, nectarines)
- Dried fruit (raisins, craisins, apricots)
To top off our trip and get ready for the MN State Fair, we indulged even further today. Our lunch break was taken at the new White Castle in Apple Valley. So we pretty much did ourselves in with a bunch of sliders. After a bunch of junk food while on the road, we couldn’t resist the latest south of the river attraction. We didn’t stick to our usual healthy fare while on the road, but we did manage some outstanding restaurants on the North Shore. Lisa will review our findings later this week! Stay tuned!!
